Passive Fire Protection

TENMAT MAKE THE SHORT-LIST FOR THE TTJ TIMBER INNOVATION AWARD 2012

TENMAT have been short-listed for the TTJ (Timber Trade Journal) Timber Innovation Award 2012 for the Firefly 107 Cavity Fire Barrier on a Roll product. The award recognises outstanding achievement and innovation in the Timber construction industry.

TTJ received a record number of entries for the 2012 innovation award. Mike Jeffree, the Editor of TTJ stated “The new Timber Innovation Award attracted an impressive number of high calibre entries, so the competition was intense and the judge’s job to decide between them was very difficult. Overall the Award highlighted just how focused this industry is on advancing the technical and market potential of timber and wood products and the level of inventiveness and ingenuity there is in the sector."

The TENMAT Firefly 107 Cavity Fire Barrier on a Roll product is a wall cavity fire barrier. The product utilises high expansion intumescent material which has a total length of 6.3metres and is fully sealed in PVC. The intumescent material has both a high expansion rate (approx 25 times) and high pressure generation. The fire barrier is only 4mm thick and so when fitted (via staples) into a typical 50mm timber wall cavity then an open cavity of 46mm remains, allowing full and unrestricted ventilation of the cavity to ensure that damp and associated degradation of the timber does not occur.

If a fire occurs in the wall cavity, the fire barrier rapidly expands to fully fill the wall cavity and any building defects which may be present to produce a fire resistant barrier. When the timber sheathing board or external cladding is eroded by the fire, the intumescent material keeps expanding to maintain a fire tight seal.
The winner will be announced at the TTJ Awards 2012, taking place on the 14 September at the Savoy, London with Nick Hewer, Lord Alan Sugar's co-star on BBC TV’s Apprentice as host.
